Reading Specialists to Bridge the Gap in Today's Schools

Most schools do not have designated reading specialists on-site anymore. They have been placed back into the classroom due to budget issues, or the position has been dissolved due to a lack of proper credentials. Working with a reading specialist online is how we can overcome this disparity in our school systems. Our students are struggling and falling behind more and more every year, and that has been exacerbated since school closures in 2020. Reading specialists are needed now more than ever.

Why online tutoring and intervention?

Choosing an online tutor allows you to have more options when selecting someone to meet the needs of your child. It also allows for more flexibility in scheduling, so that students have time for extracurricular activities. Virtual intervention and tutoring can aid in creating a routine that works well with the entire family’s schedule.

What is a reading specialist?

A reading specialist is a teacher who has a specialized education degree allowing them to work more intentionally and specifically with students to improve literacy skills.

Reading specialists are experts in adapting literacy curricula to individual students’ needs. They can give assessments and analyze data to determine what type of support and instruction students need to be successful readers and writers. A reading specialist analyzes the direct connection between successful reading and academic preparedness.

This additional degree and certification also allow a reading specialist to focus on aspects of literacy that can improve student achievement in areas beyond a foundational knowledge of the language, including:

  • Phonemes

  • Phonics

  • Comprehension

  • Instructional strategies

  • Assessment

  • Educating diverse students and nonstandard English speakers

  • Creating a supportive literacy environment

Within a school setting, a reading specialist may also work with other teachers in a professional development capacity as a curriculum coordinator or instructional coach.

How is that different from a reading tutor?

To be a reading tutor, you do not need the additional degrees or certification. This isn’t to say that a reading tutor is not effective without these things, but of the two, the reading specialist is trained and certified in assessing multiple areas of concern and analyzing for specific areas of deficiencies. Additionally, reading specialists are trained to create an intervention plan to recover students in those areas of need.

  • Assessment can take up to 3 sessions depending on the need. I will not assess students past 30-45 minutes per session depending on their age. This process will be the most time consuming, AND the most valuable as we move forward in recovering reading skills for your child.

  • Intervention sessions are conducted to fulfill the intervention plan created from the assessment data.

  • These sessions are meant to support the current grade-level learning happening in the classroom that students may need additional instruction and assistance with.

  • 1:1 on the needed area. Courses can be conducted in small groups if desired.
