My Story
My name is Liz Bradbury and I have been teaching since 1998. I started my teaching career as a first-grade teacher at a brand-new charter school in California. I soon found that my gift for teaching was highlighted in reading. As a first-year teacher, I was being sent across the county to train teachers from other charter schools on our chosen reading instruction. Within the next year, I completed my Master of Science in Education: Reading, and obtained my Reading Specialist Credential.
Throughout my 25 years working in public education, I served as an instructional coach for reading instruction and curriculum implementation at my sites, as well as a curriculum trainer within my district for writing instruction and reading intervention.
However, serving as a designated reading specialist for a school of kindergarten to 6th-grade students has been my most fulfilling assignment. In that position, I was able to sit with students one-on-one, administer assessments, understand their needs, understand their feelings about reading, and then, with that information, develop a plan for success.
Reading was never easy for me as a child. I never really felt successful at it. I was nervous to read aloud in class. Because of these feelings, I hated to read. It wasn't until I became a teacher that I started to understand my struggles as a reader.
I carried my experiences with me into my profession and became a reading specialist. I can now look back at my struggles as a child and I know what would have helped me. It wasn't until then that I really started to enjoy reading and it is now one of my favorite ways to spend my free time.
When my daughter was in 2nd grade she was diagnosed with a visual processing disorder and dyslexia. It’s amazing how your own experiences prepare you to give the best to your children. My daughter and I worked daily to successfully improve her skills and develop strategies to help her process and understand what she was reading.
Remediating the skills to decode and comprehend, as well as working past the obstacles is never easy, but it is certainly possible and extremely rewarding for students, parents, and teachers alike. This has become my purpose and passion in education.
Allow me to discover the keys that will unlock your child’s potential, confidence, and success!
